Thomas R. Cech is the author of many books on biophysics, including the textbook Biochemistry of DNA Replication, which has been translated into seven languages. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1959 and spent more than two decades at the National Institutes of Health, first as a scientist and later as director of the Division of Biophysics, where he served on the NIH Planning Committee for the Human Genome Project
He was president of the American Society for Cell Biology in 1984-85 and 1986-87, and is currently a Distinguished Professor at Emory University.
